5 Tips to Save on Energy During the Holidays

12/3/2013

With all of the decorations, cooking and colder weather, the holiday season means a higher energy bill.

Here are a few ways you can save money during the holidays.

  1. Switch to LED Christmas lights. LED Christmas lights use 90 percent less electricity than regular Christmas lights.
  2. Limit the time lights are on. Wait until dark to turn on your Christmas lights and turn them off before you go to bed. Six hours or less of daily use is a good goal to aim for. Do you have trouble remembering to turn your lights on and off? Set a timer and forget about it.
  3. Turn off room lights when the tree is lit. The lights on your Christmas tree should provide more than enough lighting.
  4. Turn the thermostat down when you have guests. Extra people in the house means extra warmth at no cost to you.
  5. Change your filter. Change your furnace filter to lower energy costs this holiday season. A clogged filter makes it difficult for the furnace to run properly and can pollute the air inside your home. A new filter won’t cost much and is easy to replace. Plus it will make your furnace work like a charm.
