Types of Air Conditioners

Choose What Works For You & Your Budget

Central Indoor AC Unit

Of all the different types of air conditioners, this is the most common type of cooling system as it is the most preferable for larger homes due to its ability to cool efficiently. Central air conditioners circulate cool air through supply and return ducts. Supply ducts and registers, which are in the wall or floors, carry cooled air into the home. Then, once the air becomes warm it circulates back into the supply ducts and registers where it will then be transported back to the air conditioner.

Installing a central air conditioning system requires a lot of planning and preparation as sizing is crucial to the functionality of the system. If you install a system that is of the wrong size, even if it’s energy-efficient, you’ll find that your utility costs are more than they should be.

Ductless, Mini-Split Air Conditioner

Ductless, mini-split systems are most common in parts of the home that have been retrofitted. Like central air conditioning systems, these systems have an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor handling unit.

If you’re looking to cool individual rooms in your house, this system might be just for you. Many ductless, mini-split systems can have as many as four indoor handling units, which are all connected to the outdoor unit.

Each zone has its own thermostat, allowing you to adjust the temperature for each room accordingly. This is especially advantageous if you’re wanting to cool only a particular part of the house that is being used.

Hybrid Air Conditioners (Heat Pump)

Like hybrid cars, hybrid heat pump systems alternate between burning fossil fuels and using electricity to run. The system intelligently chooses between the two energy sources in order to save money and energy. You won’t have to be held hostage by rising energy prices.

In the summer, your heat pump works as it normally does, pulling heat from your home and distributing it outdoors.

In the winter, your hybrid heat pump system works in reverse, pulling heat from the outside environment and distributing it into your home.

If you remember the Second Law of Thermodynamics from high school, you know that heat gets transferred from a hot object to a cold object. When the refrigerant drops below the outside temperature, the heat from the outdoors gets transferred to your heat pump’s coils and thus into your refrigerant. Now, the extracted heat can be turned into warm, conditioned air for your home.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is sustainable, energy-efficient, and has a long lifespan. Since the ground temperature below us remains a fairly consistent 55 degrees no matter how hot or cold it is in the atmosphere, geothermal technology is able to extract the heat from below and transfer it into your home. A geothermal coil (”loops” or “wells”) is installed deep in the ground and can be used to heat and cool your home.

With an increase in high-tech solutions and more tax credits for homeowners, geothermal is becoming increasingly popular. The temperature underneath your home can range between 40-50 degrees which is stable enough to draw heat or cooling year-round. While the initial cost of a geothermal system can be high, it will last for more than 50 years and the operating costs are incredibly affordable, especially as fuel costs continue to rise.

Repair or Replace?

Free Second Opinion

If your AC system is more than 10 years old or we find multiple issues, we will recommend an AC replacement. And although replacing an entire AC system can be pricey, it’s often worth the money in the long run.

Think about it: there are a lot of parts in your AC system. If we replace several belts, a coil, and resize a duct, you still have components in your system that are likely to fail soon. Oftentimes, the cost of several replacements adds up to a significant amount of money you could have put toward a totally new system.

There are also several cost advantages to owning a brand-new AC system that includes energy efficiency savings and rebates. This is why, when we find more than three significant issues- and especially if you have a system that uses R-22- we recommend an AC replacement.

Feel confident in your decision to repair or replace your air conditioner. If a contractor tells you that you have to replace your AC, give us a call. We are happy to provide a free second opinion to ensure you have a proper diagnosis of your cooling system. This service is provided to you at no charge and you are under no obligation to use Service Legends.

If you need a second pair of eyes to check your home’s cooling system, you can count on Service Legends. Call us at 515-657-6634 to experience the legendary difference with a free second opinion.

A Comfortable Investment

Size Matters.

What’s Included In Service Legends’ Air Conditioning Replacement?

1. Before we replace your AC system, we run a heat load calculation to determine proper size, take measurements, and present you with the best options for everything: a new condenser, new duct work, new condensate drain lines, and any other options such as zone systems, UV light disinfectors, air purifiers and anything that would apply to your home’s AC system and air quality.

2. We discuss your budget, and look over rebate options, tax credits, energy efficiency, and of course, price, to find the ideal system for your home. And because a new AC system is one of the most expensive things most people pay for (next to a car and your home itself), we go over our financing options.

3. After that, we work with you to find the best time to get to work. If we start sometime in the morning, we can usually finish replacing your entire AC system that same day. And if it’s an emergency, like your AC goes out in the middle of summer, we will supply you with a portable air conditioning unit until we can get to your home to replace your HVAC system.

Our AC Replacement Process

The first thing we do when we show up to install is put down a drop cloth and make sure every technician has their shoes covered so we don’t track mud or dirt into your home. We may request to move furniture or valuable items so we don’t accidentally bump into, scratch, or break anything. And if you have pets, we may ask for you to keep them in a room or at the neighbors to minimize the chances of any accidents (we do not want to accidentally run into your cat or dog while carrying a furnace).

We measure a second time just to make sure everything will fit through doorways and tight spaces. Then we begin breaking down your old AC system. We load all of your old equipment into a truck to take back and recycle.

After that, we get to work installing your new system. There will be a lot of moving of large equipment and some loud noises as we fabricate parts, drill units into place, and move around your attic. We may also lay extra boards down in your attic so we don’t step through a ceiling. Then we connect the refrigerant lines and attach your new system to your home’s power source. And then, we turn it on.

Lastly, we take you on a tour of your new system, provide you with maintenance tips, and let you know to call us if you need any adjustments or encounter any issues.
