Repair vs. Replace

Free Second Opinion

Signs that your thermostat isn’t working properly

If any of these things are happening, your thermostat may need repair or possibly replacement.

  1. No power or doesn’t respond. If your thermostat’s display is unlit, even when you’re setting a temperature, or if there’s no change in temperature after you adjust it, the first thing to do is change the batteries. If that doesn’t work, schedule a service call.
  2. The HVAC system runs constantly without turning off once the set temperature is reached. This may be the sign of frayed or faulty wiring, or that your thermostat is not calibrated properly. Since this involves dealing with electricity, we recommend professional service.
  3. There’s rapid cycling in your HVAC system. Does your HVAC system turn on and off frequently and either not get your home to the set temperature or turn on even when it’s at the set temperature? The problem may lie in the thermostat. Have a professional check it out.
  4. The HVAC is cycled on at the wrong temperature. If you’ve set your thermostat to, say, 68˚ Fahrenheit, and your furnace is cycling on at 62˚, that’s a problem. It is usually a sign that the thermostat sensor is not calibrated properly or has failed. If the difference in the set temperature and the temperature the thermostat is actually turning on the HVAC system is greater than 5˚, then you will likely have to replace the thermostat.

Upgrading Your Thermostat

If you still have an old mechanical thermostat, or an older programmable thermostat, this is the time to upgrade.

For the average American household, almost half of the annual energy bill goes to heating and cooling. Take control of your energy costs with an Energy Star certified smart thermostat. A smart thermostat is a Wi-Fi-enabled device that automatically adjusts your home’s heating and cooling temperature settings for optimal performance. Smart thermostats are easy to use and you can confidently control and monitor your heating and cooling from anywhere.

Additional Benefits

  1. Receive rebates from your energy provider, like MidAmerican Energy, for Energy Star certified smart thermostats.
  2. Using a smart thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature by even a few degrees can lower your energy use (and your heating and cooling costs).
  3. Programmable thermostats give you more precise control of your HVAC system. You can set them to run less while you’re away, saving on energy and reducing wear on your heating and cooling system.
  4. They can be controlled through your smartphone, so you can check your thermostat settings even when you’re on vacation as long as you have a cellular signal or Wi-Fi. No more worries that you forgot to adjust the temperature. And you can program it so your home is perfectly cooled or warmed to your desired temperature when you get home.
  5. A smart thermostat also monitors your home’s HVAC system. It can notify you when you need to change your air filter, when you need to schedule maintenance if something is wrong and you need a service call, and how much energy your system is using so you can adjust your settings if needed.
  6. A properly installed smart thermostat can cut your energy costs by 10% over manual thermostats!
