Top 4 Filter Facts You Need to Know

3/18/2014

Only one in five Americans pay attention to their furnace filters! Since monthly maintenance prevents an unaffordable disaster down the road, it’s important to maintain your furnace. That includes the filter!

  1. Find the filter. Some filters are located in the bottom, some in the back and some in the front (but behind a panel). If you have trouble finding your furnace’s filter, check your owner’s manual.
  2. Check your current filter. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s time to change your filter, hold your dirty filter up to the light. If you can no longer see through the filter then it’s definitely time to change it.
  3. Choose your new filter. If you simply want to protect your blower motor from dirt, then go for the least expensive filter option. If you’re more interested in keeping your air free of pollutants, choose a HEPA filter, which removes 99.97 percent of all particles greater than 0.3 micrometer. They do cost more, but they’ll clean your air better than anything else. If you do go this route, keep in mind that more expensive filters will capture more dust, pollen and pet dander. That means they’ll become clogged faster and airflow will get restricted. Restricted airflow can lead to premature furnace failure, so it’s really important that you change HEPA filters regularly!
  4. Change the filter. Pull the dirty filter out and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the arrow on the filter is pointing towards the blowing motor. Tadah!
