7 Lessons Star Wars Can Teach You About Heating & Cooling

5/5/2022

If you’re like us, then you’ve had two things on your mind lately. First, of course, is figuring out how to properly prepare your home for the changing seasons. Spring is upon us, which means we’ll have to make a few adjustments to our HVAC system in order to stay comfortable without breaking the bank.

Without further ado, here are 7 lessons that Star Wars can teach you about HVAC from the experts at Service Legends!

1. TRUST IN THE FORCE (OR THE THERMOSTAT)

The wise Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi was always quick to remind his pupil that he needed to trust in the Force. This mystical energy, which surrounds and binds everything together, guided the lives of the Jedi. It would help get them through even the most challenging of circumstances. When times were tough, the Force was there to keep things in balance.

Although the Force isn’t real (as far as we know), we’ve still got something that keeps tabs on how everything in our home is going — the thermostat. It’ll tell us when we aren’t getting enough cool air or when the temperature has spiked for no reason.

When you think something has gone haywire, consult the thermostat. If you’re suspicious of your home’s air circulation, the thermostat will either confirm your worries or reassure you that you’re just imagining things.

2. “NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS!”

If you’re a homeowner, then sometimes you play a game of chance. When it feels like an appliance isn’t working as intended or when you think a system in your home has declined in efficiency, you probably let out a big sigh. On one hand, that means you know that you’re going to have to think about replacing it sooner or later, or at least paying for a repair.

But on the other hand, if it’s still working well enough, you might be tempted to take a risk and hope it doesn’t get any worse. To paraphrase the words of the wisecracking scoundrel Han Solo, keep those calculations out of here.

When you continue using a system that clearly isn’t working right — like a leaky duct or a cracked heat exchanger, for instance — then the odds of breaking something for good will rise dramatically. Instead, do the smart thing and call a professional to fix it before you’re on the hook for an even more expensive repair.

3. “I’VE GOT A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS” – TRUST YOUR GUT

There’s a reason that the phrase “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” is so common in our everyday vocabulary now. It’s been in every Star Wars movie in one form or another, and whichever character says it usually has good reason to. Even if the situation isn’t obviously dangerous, something bad is often just on the horizon.

The same rings true for us at home when we’re dealing with our HVAC units. Even when there isn’t anything clearly wrong with our heating or cooling system, sometimes we can sense a problem just under the surface. It happens with other situations in life, so why shouldn’t you be able to feel when your HVAC unit is about to suffer a serious problem?

If you think that you’re about to deal with something bad like this soon, then it’s usually best to call an expert — like the ones at Service Legends — to stop an issue in its tracks. And if there’s nothing wrong at all? Then you can put those worries out of your mind as the technician reassures you with annual hvac maintenance.

4. “LET THE PAST DIE”

Our first quote from the most recent entry in the Skywalker saga — Episode 8: The Last Jedi — comes from the conflicted Kylo Ren. He’s part of the bloodline that the main saga revolves around, but he’s chosen to follow the dark path of Darth Vader instead of taking after his mother and father’s more noble ways.

But we can also find some truth in terms of HVAC tips here as well, believe it or not! Depending on how long you’ve had your unit, you might be used to a routine. Every year you know when to make certain adjustments so your home receives the optimal level of air conditioning or heating, and you’ve probably done it the same way for years.

However, just because you’ve always done things a certain way doesn’t mean you’re tied to repeating those steps every year. The weather changes — sometimes the winter arrives earlier and leaves later, and the same goes for the summer. Don’t assume it’s always going to stay the same. Be smart and take the weather into account before cranking the AC or replacing a filter. “Let the past die,” Ren says. “Kill it, if you have to.”

You don’t need to be that dramatic, but be smart about how you’re using your HVAC unit so you don’t waste too much money on unnecessary energy costs!

5. “YOUR EYES CAN DECEIVE YOU, DON’T TRUST THEM”

Another killer quote from Master Kenobi. He was full of them! It’s odd to think that we shouldn’t trust our eyes, but eyes can play some irritating tricks on us — and that includes the environment at home.

Have you ever sworn that you could’ve seen some smoke drifting around, or maybe a big cloud of dust? Obviously, that raises some imminent concern, and you might spring into action only to find out that it was nothing. And while you’re happy that you don’t have any irritants floating around, it’s still frustrating that it looked like your home was infested in the first place.

So, while we’re not as absolute about trusting our eyes as Obi-Wan was, we’d still recommend exercising some caution when diagnosing HVAC issues by yourself. Do your due diligence to make sure something is actually wrong — and just give us a call to see if our team can help you narrow down what the issue might be.

6. “YOU CAN’T STOP CHANGE ANY MORE THAN YOU CAN STOP THE SUNS FROM SETTING”

We’re reaching back to the beginning of the series with this one — chronologically, at least. Shmi Skywalker, the mother of the future Darth Vader, had some wise words about the inability of humans to control things out of our reach.

While this was spoken in the context of a galaxy-spanning quest to restore the balance between good and evil, it bears some truth for us too. We’d most certainly like to be able to dictate when the weather changes so we can stay cool or warm depending on the time of year, but the truth is that we can’t.

Changes to the weather will always happen. As much as we’d like to be able to never change an air filter or adjust a thermostat, it’s just a given that we’ll deal with these HVAC-related tasks forever. The sooner we stop wishing things would be different and instead put that energy toward optimizing our homes all the time, the better!

7. “YOU WILL NEVER FIND A MORE WRETCHED HIVE OF SCUM AND VILLAINY”

The hub of Mos Eisley on Tatooine is a place most of us would never dare venture near — there are way too many gunslingers and dangerous scoundrels there for our liking. And with all those Imperial troops scouring the place as well? No thanks!

But Obi-Wan’s warnings work just as well for the little condenser unit for our HVAC systems sitting outside on that concrete slab. When they’re out there all day every day, some unwelcome guests can take that to be an invitation to set up a home in there. Small animals enjoy the condenser’s shade, which provides a cool place for them to hang out.

They’ll stay there as long as they can, too, so you need to make sure they can’t get there in the first place. Do some periodic cleaning with a broom to get rid of any lowlife critters trying to stake out a place they can squat in.
