Which is better: Whole-house humidifiers or portable room humidifiers?

Whole-house humidifiers
A whole-house humidifier features the ability to draw water directly from your water supply through a blower system integrated into your furnace.
You can select from a few different types of units
- One offers a sprayer that injects mists into the airflow through your ductwork.
- Another unit offers a foam cylinder that rotates in a water tray with air blowing through and around it.
- For homes with geothermal or heat pump systems steam humidifiers are the best solution.
Since it costs a lot less to humidify the air than to heat it, a humidifier can save you a lot of money!
Did you know for the best indoor comfort and health, a relative humidity of about 45% is ideal?
At temperatures typically found indoors, this humidity level makes the air feel approximately what the temperature indicates, and your skin and lungs do not dry out and become irritated.
Advantages
- Install and forget it
- Virtually no maintenance
- Keeps your entire home at even humidity
- One-time setup
- Quiet and virtually soundless
- Cost-efficient to install
- Simple to clean
- Lower utilities
- Keep wood floors from drying out and buckling
Portable room humidifiers
Large freestanding humidifiers have been utilized considerably over the years. Each one offers the ability to have their own water supply and plugs into any standard electrical outlet. These units sit in the room you want to humidify. These large or small units usually require some creative decorating to make them look like they “fit” as opposed to being an awkward humidifier that is unwelcome long-staying house guests for the winter.
Advantages
- Portable
- Great for renters
- Simple to operate
- Excellent at keeping smaller areas humidified
Disadvantages
- Expensive when compared to whole-house units
- Heavy but on rollers
- Noisy similar to a window AC unit
- Continued maintenance
- Requires water refills daily
