Business cliché #1: "What gets measured gets done"

Does this idea really make sense?

You'll need to think both/and here:

  • both that it's important to measure to track performance
  • and that the most significant things that get done both in life generally and in business are entirely subjective and have no external measurement criteria, such as:
    • fulfilling our potential
    • raising a family
    • expressing ourselves creatively.

Also: This cliché induces an over-emphasis on tangible/visible outputs which research has shown are of least importance to the customer, at least as factors likely to differentiate your product or service.

Bottom line: Scrap it!
